In theory at least, the all-Texan affair is the perfect chance for Texas A&M to start the campaign on the front foot, before facing defending champions Clemson on the road nine days later.
The Aggies went 9-4 last season in Jimbo Fisher’s first campaign in charge, their best record since the 2013 season. Texas A&M went 5-3 against SEC opponents and won the Gator Bowl, thrashing North Carolina State 52-13.
Ranked 12th in the country by the Associated Press, the Aggies are expected to continue their development in Fisher’s second season in College Station. The 53-year-old, who won a national title when in charge of Florida State, has been working hard to instil a winning culture at Texas A&M.
”Hopefully, it’s sinking in,” he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. ”I believe it is by how we practice and the toughness and the way we play and compete.”
Improvement could be hard to come by in a season that presents the Aggies with a grueling schedule. Following the match against Clemson, Texas A&M will play another three teams currently ranked in the top 10.
On October 12, No. 2 Alabama travels to College Station, before back-to-back meetings against No. 3 Georgia and No. 6 LSU in November.
Kellen Mond will again take the reins at quarterback, after an off-season characterized by a lot of discussion over his improvement.
As sophomore, the signal caller threw for 3,107 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions last year but completed just 57.3 percent of passes.
Meanwhile Quartney Davis and Jhamon Ausbon are expected to lead the receiving corps and Jashaun Corbin is the starting running back.
The Aggies will come across a familiar face in their season opener, as Bobcats first year coach Jake Spavital spent three years as assistant at Texas A&M.
The second-youngest head coach in the FBS, Spavital has a sizable task on his hands after Texas State went 3-9 in the Sun Belt last season.
The Bobcats, however, have an experienced team, with 10 starters for its defense returning this year. That includes linebackers Bryan London II and Nikolas Daniels, who finished as the Sun Belt’s top two tacklers.
Texas State will return their entire offensive line from last year, but sophomore quarterback Tyler Vitt will have his work cut out as the offense ranked 122nd out of 130 teams in terms of points scored. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Thursday.
